Audiosurf; it’s a music visualiser with a difference; while it’s creating a crazy, dreamlike backdrop for your music collection, it’s also letting you control the action in a block matching puzzle game. It’s a lot like guitar hero, but you can use your own songs and seriously, guitar hero looks like crap compared to this.

You throw it an MP3, it assess changes in tempo, volume, timbre, speed and beat, creates a race track and throws icons at you in the beat of the song as you collect them to create blocks of point-splashing colour. It’s creative, it’s amazing and it’s painfully addictive; I got the beta at around 4:00 and it’s now half past seven and I’ve exhausted my favourite electronic and dance music in this virtual raceway. This is mind bending stuff and laughs in the face of “Downloadable Song Packs” or “Contains 30 chart-topping covers”; this is your music and its creating fitting tracks in less than a minute. Don’t ask how I got the beta late…

EDIT: Now you can pre-purchase the game - getting 10% off the standard price of $9.95 - and even better, the Orange Box soundtrack (yes, including ‘Still Alive’) will be included. It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction.

This will be running on a projector in a dark room for my next party…
